CRYPTOCURRENCY SECURITY · RECOVERY SCAMS · 4 MIN READ
Losing cryptocurrency to a scam can be devastating. Unfortunately, the first loss may not always be the last.
After a victim reports a cryptocurrency theft online or discusses it publicly, they may become a target for another group of scammers claiming to offer recovery services.
This is sometimes called a recovery scam — a fraud designed to exploit someone who has already lost money.
At Canva Recovery Team (CRT), we encourage victims to be especially cautious when seeking help after a cryptocurrency incident.
How the Second Scam Begins
Recovery scammers may find victims through:
- Social-media posts
- Cryptocurrency forums
- Comments on scam-related posts
- Fake recovery advertisements
- Direct messages
- Messaging applications
The scammer may claim to be a blockchain investigator, cybersecurity specialist, government agent, lawyer, or cryptocurrency recovery expert.
They may even have information about the victim’s original loss.
The Promise of Guaranteed Recovery
One of the biggest warning signs is a guarantee.
A person may claim:
“We have already located your cryptocurrency.”
They may then request a payment for:
- Blockchain clearance
- Government fees
- Tax payments
- Wallet activation
- Legal processing
- Recovery software
- Cryptocurrency release fees
After the first payment, another demand may follow.
A legitimate investigation cannot guarantee that stolen cryptocurrency will be recovered before the relevant evidence has been properly assessed.
They May Ask for Your Private Information
Never give a supposed recovery agent your:
- Seed phrase
- Private keys
- Wallet password
- Two-factor authentication codes
- Exchange login credentials
Anyone who obtains these details may potentially gain control of your remaining assets.
How to Evaluate a Recovery Service
Before engaging anyone, look beyond their claims.
Ask:
Who are they?
Verify the organization independently.
What exactly are they offering?
A legitimate investigation should explain its scope rather than simply promising that money will be returned.
What evidence do they need?
Transaction hashes, wallet addresses, communications, and supporting documentation can be relevant. Your private keys and seed phrase should remain private.
Are they guaranteeing recovery?
Be extremely cautious of guaranteed results.
How Canva Recovery Team Approaches Cases
At Canva Recovery Team, our work begins with the available evidence.
Depending on the circumstances, our team may review:
- Blockchain transactions
- Wallet addresses
- Transaction histories
- Communications
- Websites
- Screenshots
- Payment records
- Other relevant documentation
We use this information to help establish what happened and identify potentially relevant avenues for further action.
We do not ask clients to surrender their private keys or seed phrases.
And importantly, we do not promise guaranteed recovery.
Already Lost Cryptocurrency?
If you have already been affected by a cryptocurrency scam, don’t allow urgency to push you into another decision that could increase your losses.
Preserve your evidence, secure your remaining accounts, and carefully verify anyone offering assistance.
At Canva Recovery Team, our focus is blockchain investigation, evidence documentation, and recovery support based on the facts available in each case.
The first scam can take your cryptocurrency. The second can take even more.
Recover What Matters. Pursue the Evidence.
