CRYPTOCURRENCY FRAUD · DIGITAL ASSET INVESTIGATION · 4 MIN READ
Losing cryptocurrency to fraud can leave victims unsure about what to do next. One of the most important steps is to preserve the evidence and report the incident through the appropriate channels.
At Canva Recovery Team (CRT), we help clients organize blockchain transactions and supporting evidence so that the circumstances surrounding a digital asset loss can be properly documented.
Start by Preserving the Evidence
Before deleting messages, closing accounts, or contacting the person who defrauded you, preserve as much information as possible.
Important evidence may include:
- Transaction hashes or IDs
- Sending and receiving wallet addresses
- Cryptocurrency and amount transferred
- Date and time of transactions
- Exchange or wallet information
- Website addresses
- Emails and messages
- Phone numbers and usernames
- Screenshots
- Payment receipts
- A timeline explaining what happened
The FBI specifically identifies wallet addresses, cryptocurrency amounts, transaction dates and times, and transaction hashes as important information when reporting cryptocurrency fraud.
Reporting Crypto Fraud in the United States
For victims in the United States, cryptocurrency scams can be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
The FBI encourages victims to provide as much transaction and scam-related information as possible, including wallet addresses, transaction hashes, communications, websites, and information about the individuals involved. Reports can be submitted even when the victim does not have complete transaction information.
Victims should also contact the cryptocurrency exchange, wallet provider, or other financial service involved as soon as possible.
Reporting Crypto Fraud in the United Kingdom
UK victims should report fraud through Report Fraud, the UK’s national reporting service. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) also advises victims of financial scams to report the incident and can receive reports concerning firms and financial services within its regulatory remit.
If the suspected scam involves an investment or crypto-related financial promotion, checking whether the firm is authorised through the FCA’s official channels can also provide useful information.
Why Blockchain Evidence Matters
Cryptocurrency transactions can provide a chronological record of how digital assets moved.
At CRT, we can examine relevant transaction information to help document:
The original transfer.
The receiving wallet.
Subsequent movement of funds.
Relevant transaction relationships.
Potential points requiring further investigation.
However, a wallet address does not automatically identify the person controlling it. Additional evidence may be required to connect blockchain activity with an individual, exchange account, organization, or other entity.
Don’t Pay a Second Scammer
Crypto victims can become targets for recovery scams after their initial loss.
Be cautious of anyone who guarantees recovery, demands cryptocurrency upfront, or asks for your seed phrase, private keys, passwords, or authentication codes.
Both U.S. and UK authorities warn that fraudulent recovery services can target people who have already lost money.
How Canva Recovery Team Can Help
At Canva Recovery Team, our focus is on blockchain investigation, transaction analysis, and evidence documentation.
We can help clients organize the available information surrounding a suspected cryptocurrency theft or fraud and assess relevant blockchain activity.
Our role is evidence-based. The outcome of a case depends on the transaction history, available evidence, applicable procedures, and other circumstances.
If You Have Lost Cryptocurrency
Don’t delete the evidence. Don’t send additional money to the scammer. Don’t give your private keys to a supposed recovery specialist.
Preserve the transaction trail. Document what happened. Report the fraud. Then seek informed assistance.
