Can Stolen Cryptocurrency Be Traced? Understanding Blockchain Investigation

BLOCKCHAIN INVESTIGATION · CRYPTOCURRENCY RECOVERY · 6 MIN READ

When cryptocurrency is stolen, one of the first questions people ask our team is:

“Can my cryptocurrency be traced?”

In many cases, cryptocurrency transactions can be traced across a public blockchain. The blockchain can provide a permanent record showing how funds moved from one address to another.

However, tracing cryptocurrency is not the same as automatically identifying the person responsible or recovering the stolen funds.

At Canva Recovery Team (CRT), we use blockchain investigation and evidence analysis to help clients understand what happened to their cryptocurrency and identify relevant transaction activity.

What Does Cryptocurrency Tracing Actually Mean?

Most public blockchains record transactions that can be examined using blockchain explorers and specialized analytical tools.

Depending on the blockchain involved, investigators may be able to examine:

  • Sending wallet addresses
  • Receiving wallet addresses
  • Transaction hashes
  • Transaction amounts
  • Transaction times
  • Subsequent transfers
  • Related wallet activity

This information can help create a chronological picture of how cryptocurrency moved after an unauthorized transfer.

For example:

Victim’s wallet → Receiving address → Secondary wallet → Exchange or service

Our investigation may follow relevant transactions to understand the movement of funds and identify points that may require further investigation.

Can a Wallet Address Reveal Someone’s Identity?

Not by itself.

A blockchain address is generally an identifier rather than a person’s name or physical identity.

For example, blockchain records may show that funds moved from Wallet A to Wallet B. That establishes a transaction relationship, but it does not automatically prove who controls Wallet B.

Additional evidence may be necessary to establish an association between a wallet and an individual, organization, exchange account, or other entity.

Depending on the circumstances, relevant evidence may include:

  • Cryptocurrency exchange records
  • Account information
  • Email communications
  • Social-media conversations
  • Website information
  • Payment records
  • Transaction history
  • Other digital evidence

This distinction is central to responsible blockchain investigation.

The blockchain can show where funds moved. Additional evidence may be required to determine who was behind the relevant activity.

What Happens After Stolen Cryptocurrency Is Transferred?

After a theft, cryptocurrency may be moved through multiple wallet addresses.

Funds may also be divided into smaller amounts or transferred through different services and blockchain networks.

At CRT, our blockchain investigation process may examine relevant activity to determine:

The Initial Transaction

We identify the transaction associated with the reported theft or unauthorized transfer.

Subsequent Transactions

We examine relevant transfers that occurred after the original transaction.

Address Relationships

We look at transaction relationships between relevant addresses to understand how funds moved.

Potential Service Interactions

Where appropriate, we examine whether funds appear to have interacted with identifiable cryptocurrency services or other relevant entities.

Supporting Evidence

Blockchain information is considered alongside other evidence supplied by the client, such as communications, websites, screenshots, receipts, and account records.

Can Blockchain Investigation Recover Stolen Cryptocurrency?

Tracing is not the same as recovery.

A blockchain investigation may help establish where cryptocurrency moved, but confirmed blockchain transactions generally cannot simply be reversed by an investigator.

The possibility of recovery depends on the individual circumstances of the case.

Factors may include:

  • Where the cryptocurrency was transferred
  • Whether the funds remain accessible
  • Whether the funds reached an identifiable service
  • Available evidence
  • Whether relevant organizations can take action
  • Applicable legal procedures
  • Cooperation from exchanges or other entities
  • Actions taken by law enforcement or legal representatives

For this reason, CRT does not promise guaranteed recovery.

Instead, we focus on evidence-based investigation and documentation.

Why Acting Quickly Can Matter

Cryptocurrency transactions can continue after the initial theft.

Funds may move through additional addresses or services, potentially making the transaction history more complex.

This is why we encourage individuals who believe they have been affected by cryptocurrency theft or fraud to preserve their evidence as soon as possible.

Useful information includes:

  • Transaction hashes
  • Wallet addresses
  • Cryptocurrency and amount
  • Blockchain network
  • Date and time of transactions
  • Exchange or wallet information
  • Screenshots
  • Emails
  • Telegram, WhatsApp, or other communications
  • Website addresses
  • Payment receipts
  • Information about the person or organization involved

Do not delete communications simply because they appear embarrassing or unimportant.

Information that seems insignificant initially may provide useful context when combined with blockchain records.

How Canva Recovery Team Conducts Blockchain Investigations

At Canva Recovery Team, our approach is built around blockchain analysis, evidence preservation, documentation, and responsible case assessment.

When a client contacts us, our team can begin by reviewing the information available about the incident.

1. Case Information Review

We examine the information provided by the client to understand how the incident occurred and identify the relevant cryptocurrency transactions.

2. Blockchain Analysis

Relevant transaction hashes and wallet addresses can be examined to establish the movement of funds on the applicable blockchain.

3. Transaction Mapping

Where appropriate, transaction activity can be organized to show how funds moved between addresses.

4. Evidence Documentation

Blockchain findings can be considered alongside communications, websites, screenshots, payment records, and other supporting evidence.

5. Recovery Pathway Assessment

Once the available evidence has been reviewed, we can help identify potential next steps based on the circumstances of the case.

These steps may involve communicating with relevant cryptocurrency platforms, legal professionals, or appropriate authorities.

Protect Yourself From Secondary Recovery Scams

People who have already lost cryptocurrency are sometimes targeted by individuals claiming they can recover the funds.

Be cautious of anyone who:

  • Guarantees that your cryptocurrency will be recovered
  • Demands your seed phrase
  • Requests your private keys
  • Asks for your wallet password
  • Claims to have already recovered your funds without evidence
  • Demands cryptocurrency payments to “unlock” recovered funds
  • Uses pressure or threats to make you pay immediately

CRT will never require your seed phrase or private keys in order to conduct a blockchain investigation.

Your wallet credentials should remain under your control.

What Blockchain Investigation Can — and Cannot — Establish

A professional investigation should clearly distinguish between established facts and assumptions.

Blockchain evidence may establish:

Where a transaction was sent.

When a transaction occurred.

How much cryptocurrency was transferred.

Which addresses subsequently received funds.

How funds moved between blockchain addresses.

Blockchain evidence alone may not establish:

The real-world identity of an address owner.

That a particular individual controlled a specific address.

That stolen funds can definitely be recovered.

That a transaction can be reversed.

Additional evidence and, in some circumstances, legal or law-enforcement processes may be necessary.

Have You Lost Cryptocurrency?

If your cryptocurrency has been stolen, sent without authorization, or lost through a suspected cryptocurrency scam, Canva Recovery Team can help you begin with the evidence.

Our team can review available transaction information, analyze relevant blockchain activity, and organize supporting evidence to help establish what happened and what avenues may be available.

We do not rely on unrealistic promises.

We investigate the evidence. We document the transaction trail. We help you understand your available options.

Start With the Evidence

If you believe you have been affected by cryptocurrency theft or fraud, submit your case to Canva Recovery Team for a confidential assessment.
